Episode #153: Urban Chestnut Zwickel
Zwickel is quite simply an unfiltered lager. But the combination of full flavor and refreshing qualities makes it so much more than the sum of its parts. It’s also a bit of an obessesion for Chris. So when he saw the All-Star brewer from Urban Chestnut in St. Louis had decided to bottle their Zwickel, he was a happy man!

I think often these beers are spelled just “zwickl”, and sometimes “zwick’l”.
I have to admit, I always thought that New Glarus “Spotted Cow” was essentially a zwickel, and then they released “Zwickel” (now “Yokel” I believe), and I went “hmm…”.
As far as tasting participation… Seeing how it’s getting easier to get beers from further afar (see BeerJobber, for instance), I could see potentially selling memberships/shares for tasting events — signup online, pay your share, the store hosts, you get an episode. Might be a bear to organize, and schedules would be at the mercy of the shipper to some extent, but could make for some interesting events/shows.
Great idea Russ!
For Spotted Cow, it’s technically a cream ale I believe.
My daughter just informed me that you opened up in her neighborhood and gave me you web address. Enjoyed your videos as they were interesting and not pretenious. Been doing craft beers for about 20 yrs and would enjoy a discussion when I come up to visit next time. Not to plit hairs but your pronounciation of Zwickel is a bit too Americanized and I would recommend “Zvickel”. A bit more authentically German. By the wat I’ve had it at the brewery and its more or less there flagship German beer. Keep up the good work.
