Episode #149: Three Floyds Moloko Vertical Tasting

A “vertical” tasting is when you drink the same beer from several different years. Usually, verticals are associated with Russian Imperial Stouts or Barleywines. Today, Chris pulls a random 4-year vertical of an Imperial Milk Stout, Moloko. Do not attempt this at home! Or do attempt it – It’s only beer!

  1. From "Chris" :

Glad you liked it, Wes! The next vert. I do is likely to be a 5yr Dark lord vertical. If you are in the Chicago area, I’ll be opening it up for viewers to try as well!

  2. From "Brad K." :

Great show. I recently stashed away one of my ’12 BCBS in anticipation of doing a vertical in the future. Do you have any of the Stone Vertical Epics and if so will there be a show?

  3. From "Eric" :

I really dig the idea. Please do more. I’ve started to do this myself. Got a couple Bourbon County’s, a Sucaba, and a couple Fire’s in the cellar with the wine.

  4. From "wes" :

I do live in Chicago. That sounds amazing. Please let me know when you plan on doing it. so far, I’ve been too lazy to deal with the crowds and attend dark lord day, so I have yet to try it.

  5. From "Wes Skidgel" :

I do live in Chicago. That would be awesome. Please let me know when you plan on doing it. So far I’ve been too lazy to go to dark lord day, so I’ve never tried it. I left a comment similar to this using my phone, but I’m not sure it actually submitted. Sorry if this ends up being a duplicate

  6. From "Navy_mike" :

A very passionate show, it’s no surprise that you became a Certified Cicerone when even in episode #149 your still giddy as a school girl over craft beer. Loved the comparisons in descriptions made available from vertical tastings as a viewer, it’s just amazing to hear in such detailed explanations how beer can change in just a year. Makes me realize I need to stop drinking of all my beer and actually cellar some of it for this very purpose, which of course is an epic everyday struggle.

  7. From "Jeffrey Gross" :

Hey chris, when would the 5 year vertical be? I have an 07, which would make it 6 years, i could bring by the store possibly for ya to sample along

  8. From "Tyler" :

Really enjoyed this episode. Just discovered your site tonight, but I really like what you’re doing.

Also, your take on moving from youngest to oldest makes a lot of sense. I think I’ll have to alter the way I do my next vertical, to see how it goes.

    Thanks!
