Episode #122: Schwarzbier

Helles Lager is the light, malty, session beer of choice in the Bavaria region of Germany. A close cousin of the hoppier pilsner from which it drew it’s inspiration, Helles is a beer many people have drunk for years without even knowing it.

Ha ha, you called me out! And sadly, I DON’T know the answer… My German geography isn’t great either, though I can find Munich and Bamberg on a map no problem. 🙂 A little Googling shows that it’s very central so far as north-south goes, and somewhat central east-west, but pulled a bit east toward Prague, which is understandable.

I was just at Sprecher weekend before last, and they said that they sell more root beer than everything else they make combined. Wow. I used to drink the Black Bavarian a lot — it’s one of the two beers they were making since day one, if I remember right (the Amber was the other). I’m pretty sure you can find it at some of the Binny’s locations, maybe elsewhere.

Great descriptions of each beer. I was getting hungry each time you mentioned cake or brownies! When I was out in Oregon earlier this summer, I was surprised by how much I really enjoyed the Full Sail Black Session Lager – do you know if that is considered a Schwarzbier?

Also, I was just in Utah myself, and the 4% law is still in effect, but applies only to beer on draft. Most of the breweries made “bigger” beers in bottles. We didn’t make it to Uinta in time, unfortunately.

Chris won’t talk to us? Maybe the lovely Margaret will?

  4. From "Chris" :

Hey Castello, sorry for the silence. I’ve been on the road the last few days…

    What would Vaynerneck say?
